SITTING WITH YOURSELFA space for healing + growth

What to expect

You do not have to know exactly what to say before you begin.

Counselling can feel unfamiliar before you’ve experienced it. This guide is here to make the first steps a little more knowable — without suggesting there is one perfect way a session should go.

A first step

Start with a conversation.

20-minute complimentary discovery call

The discovery call is a chance to ask questions, share a little about what is bringing you to counselling and get a sense of whether working together feels worth exploring. You do not need to tell your whole story. You are not being assessed, and having the call does not commit you to ongoing counselling.

The first session

Part of the first session is simply getting oriented.

A first session can include informed consent, privacy and confidentiality, what has brought you in, what you hope might feel different, and what would help the pace feel manageable. There is no expectation that you explain everything at once. Getting to know how it feels to speak together is part of the work too.

Preparing

You can prepare a little. You can also simply show up.

You do not need a timeline, a list of goals or the perfect opening sentence. If writing things down helps you feel steadier, a few notes about what has been taking up space lately can be enough. For online sessions, it can help to have a private-enough place to speak, a charged device, a stable connection and a few quiet minutes afterwards if your day allows it.

Beginning

“I don’t know where to start” is enough.

Sometimes you know exactly what you want to talk about. Sometimes several things are tangled together. Sometimes all you know is that something feels hard. Any of those can be a real place to begin.

Working together

You are allowed to notice how counselling feels.

A useful working relationship is collaborative. You can ask for clarification, say when something does not land, request more structure or let Krissy know when you need to slow down.
